While the heavy fighting was going on in Gettysburg and in Vicksburg, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan brought the Southern rebellion to the Midwest with a bold race through Indiana and Southwestern Ohio on July 13, 1863.
With a fall season themed “”Hard Road to Liberty: Ohio and the Civil War ,” the Colligan History Project will host a panel discussion, “Memorializing John Hunt Morgan & the 1863 Ohio-Indiana Raid,” to discuss Morgan’s legacy.
Matthew Smith will host the program featuring Hamilton historian Jim Blount; Lester Horwitz and David L. Mowery, independent scholars; and G. Michael Pratt, Professor of Anthropology, Miami University.

The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail memorializing the route of Confederate General Morgan and his “Raiders” in July of 1863 features markers at 56 sites in Ohio alone, connecting with trails in Indiana and Kentucky. A panel of Civil War experts explores the making of this trail, its sponsors, and how the only Civil War action on Ohio soil is remembered today.
